Capitol Hill

Seattle’s Capitol Hill is an eclectic, colorful urban center, and Broadway Avenue -- the neighborhood's famous (and infamous) main street -- serves as its focal point. Broadway has a well-deserved reputation for libertine excess, a collection of subversive shops and tattoo parlors. It’s also home to the city’s thriving gay and lesbian community.

With a reputation like this, it’s no wonder that Capitol Hill is where Seattleites send tourists who seek an out-of-the-ordinary Seattle experience.

The Capitol Hill community is also a hub for religion. It is home to St. Mark's Cathedral, the largest congregation for Episcopalians in the Pacific Northwest, and St. Joseph's Church, a prominent landmark in the historically Catholic neighborhood.

More secular attractions like entertainment and shopping provide the biggest lures to residents of other neighborhoods and tourists, as well as a diverse dining scene that won’t empty a wallet.

Capitol Hill is also home to many institutions of higher learning—within a few blocks of each other are Seattle Central Community College and the nationally acclaimed Cornish College of the Arts. Seattle University is a few blocks south on Broadway on nearby First Hill, but a short downhill walk puts students into the heart of Broadway.
The neighborhood is bordered by Fuhrman Avenue East on the north, Interstate 5 on the west, East Pike Street on the south and 24th Avenue East.

Another attraction of Capitol Hill is the dozens of stately Victorian homes, many of them restored to show-case quality by their doting owners, many of whom welcome the public for tours during the year.
